A timeless and romantic midi dress designed for the quiet moments and simple pleasures of everyday life. The Alma Dress features a gathered round neckline finished with visible bias binding, your choice of relaxed flutter sleeves or full-length sleeves. The dress has an adjustable drawstring waist with fabric ties at the sides (including the overlapping method - majority of the testers hadn’t seen this method used in dressmaking before). The gathered waist flows into an A-line skirt with large hidden inseam pockets, finished with either a deep hem facing or a regular double-fold hem.
Pattern difficulty
The Alma Dress is one of our most beginner-friendly patterns, with simple construction and a relaxed, adjustable fit. There are no zippers or other closures, simply slip it on and go. Optional inseam pockets are included for those looking to add functionality and try a new technique.
Fabric recommendations
The Alma Dress is designed for lightweight to midweight woven fabrics that offer softness and drape while maintaining enough structure. Ideal choices include linen, cotton and block prints. Cotton is the easiest to work with, while fabrics with more drape (such as rayon/viscose or Tencel) will create a softer silhouette. The sample is made from a plaid linen, 155 gsm and an ivory linen, 140 gsm. Please note that using linen may increase the difficulty level of this pattern, as linen tends to fray easily and can stretch or “grow” during sewing.
Fabric usage
The cutting layout is based on fabric 140 cm (55 inch) wide. The pieces are arranged efficiently to minimize waste, but we recommend buying a little extra fabric to account for shrinkage, print alignment, or cutting adjustments.
