I’m proud to share my latest pattern release with you. This time it’s one of our classics and a long-time best-seller - the Ella Dress - which has just received a major update that I’m really excited about!
This update has been in the works for three months. It began when I wanted to see if I could recreate the viral GAP x Dôen dress, the one in gingham linen with an adjustable neckline.
Looking back, it feels a bit wild to have put this much time into a pattern that’s already been released (and is now being re-released as a free update). But I’ve always believed in bringing extra value into my patterns. There’s something I really enjoy about keeping existing patterns current, rather than following industry norms of fast releases and paid expansion packs.

What’s new in the updated Ella pattern
I truly believe this update brings lasting value and elevates the garment. In fact, the result is closer to getting two patterns in one, with a re-drafted bodice, and updated techniques.
Here’s what’s included:
Here’s what’s included:
• Three new sizes: EU 50-54 / UK 22-26 / US 20-24. (The entire size range has been tested up to a cup size F over two rounds of pattern testing.)
• A newly drafted bodice with a better fit for fuller busts, including a higher, adjustable neckline option.
• Updated sleeve views: The flutter sleeve and short puff sleeve from the previous version have both been improved with a shorter length and a softer sleeve shape for a cleaner finish and better proportions.
• 22 additional pages in the instruction booklet, including step-by-step illustrations and a guide to making pattern adjustments.
• Projector files now included.

Fabric notes
For my updated Ella Dress, I used a gingham linen from The Fabric Store. It was lovely to work with, and I also love using linen blends for this pattern. My first sample, made in an ivory linen-viscose from my own shop, has been worn on repeat - it’s soft, drapes well, and isn’t see-through.
I recommend woven fabrics with structure and drape: linen blends, cotton poplin, cotton/viscose blends, and Tencel all work beautifully. I’ve also seen stunning versions made in silkier fabrics like viscose, rayon, and even silk. The Ella Dress makes a beautiful special-occasion dress. Fun fact: it’s one of our best-selling patterns for weddings!

Sizing and neckline options
The pattern now comes in sizes EU 34-54 / UK 6-26 / US 2-24. With this update, I added three new sizes and re-graded the drawstring neckline for a fuller bust.
• The original neckline, now called the Classic neckline, was graded for an A/B cup.
• The new Drawstring neckline has been tested up to an F cup and offers a higher, rounder shape with adjustable fit.
This means the two views offer distinctly different silhouettes:
• Classic neckline, View A: deeper, plunging V
• Drawstring neckline, View B: higher, softly rounded, adjustable

Skill level
The previous Ella pattern was rated Advanced Intermediate. With the updated bodice, added views, and expanded instruction booklet (now 22 pages longer), the skill level is now rated Intermediate.
The drawstring neckline is easier to fit, quicker to sew, and more accessible for beginner sewists. While some beginners have made the Ella Dress with great success, I still recommend practicing a bit before sewing this one. The most challenging steps are sewing the sleeve gussets and inserting the invisible zipper.
Photo by @sewing_amoreHow to get the update
The Ella Dress update is completely free for our previous customers. Here’s how to access it:
• If you purchased through our website: The updated pattern is already available in your account, replacing the old version.
• If you purchased on Etsy: Unfortunately, Etsy doesn’t allow sellers to send updated files. To work around this, we’ve built a download platform where you can access the update using your original order number. You’ll find instructions under Information → Download on our website.
Important note: Maintaining this workaround for Etsy is no longer sustainable. From January 1, 2026, all future updates will only be available through silversagapatterns.com. If you’d like to continue receiving updates, we recommend purchasing directly from our site going forward.
Lastly, I’m so grateful to our incredible testing team who helped bring this update to life. You’ve made the Ella pattern more accessible, more inclusive, and more beautiful than ever! Thank you!
